Not too long ago, as I was driving on Washington Avenue, I noticed a green awning being painted advertising burgers, hotdogs, wings and salad. Lately, I’ve been in that area and I decided it was time to pay “the bee” a visit! The little corner eatery was cute, comfortable, served a delicious lunch, and talking to the new owner was most enjoyable.
Located at 2605 Washington, between mid-town and downtown, the bee is open for lunch and dinner. They are open Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. I asked how the restaurant got its name, and the owner explained that her and her business partner both have B’s in their names and also like to use honey in many of their house made sauces and dressings. The owners, Brittany Yates and Rhonda Beasley were both hard at work when I arrived for a late lunch.
In addition to the regular menu items of burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, and wings, the bee offers a daily lunch special; occasionally you will find a special not on the menu, created by Brittany for customers to check out.
Side items are a la carte, but the portions are quite large. I ordered the Queso Fries-with home made queso sauce and they were awesome. The sauce had a tangy taste that left you wanting more of these tasty seasoned spuds. Soups and Chili would also make a great side item on these cold, windy days.
Thanksgiving included lots of chicken and turkey, so for this lunch I went with a good ‘ol BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger. It was hot, sloppy, and it hit the spot with my side of queso fries.
Brittany told me a favorite of her customers are the wings. They are offered in seven different varieties from Naked (plain) to Garlic Parmesan, Honey Bar B Que, and Lemon Pepper. Honey Pineapple Teriyaki seems to be the most popular. She said most ingredients she uses are bought fresh daily and her bread is bought locally from Fazio’s Bakery. You could see the pride she takes in serving the best quality food to her customers.
Sandwiches include the Ultimate Steak and Cheese, BLT, Classic Italian Subs, and Roast Beef to name a few; Wraps are very popular these days and the bees are served on your choice of tomato-basil, garlic & herb, or flour tortilla. Taco wraps (yum), Veggie, Chicken Caesar, and BBQ Chicken are some of the wrap choices on the menu.
The owner was so nice and enthusiastic about her business, I wanted to call people and spread her enthusiasm! the bee offers catering options and will work with you on whatever type of menu you like for your holiday party or family get together. For those who live or work in downtown or midtown, the bee will be happy to deliver. These gals are working so hard, I hope if your in their neighborhood, you can stop in to check them out and grab a bite to eat or a menu to go–2605 Washington!
